Utterance Or Utter Nonsense
Acts 2:1-4 And when the day of Pentecost
was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. (2) And
suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it
filled all the house where they were sitting. (3) And there appeared unto
them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. (4) And
they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other
tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. (KJV)
In the beginning with the disciples, once
the Holy Spirit was poured out, they found that they had entered an
entirely different realm; and that a life that was influenced by outward events
and rituals had now changed to something inward, a new creation so to
speak. Now keep in mind the fact that once there was a change of heart, the
Lord having taken out the stony one and replacing it with a new heart, then
out of the abundance of that heart would come also a new and different
utterance as well. Utterance simply means communication, how to speak; and
as we see in the beginning of their walk in the Spirit something or should
I say someone else was speaking through them delivering a message from
above.
1 Corinthians 14:6-8 Now, brethren, if I
come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I
shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by
prophesying, or by doctrine? (7) And even things without life giving sound,
whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how
shall it be known what is piped or harped? (8) For if the trumpet give an
uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle? (KJV)
Now some people think an effective
demonstration of the Holy Spirit is by uttering or speaking in tongues,
which as Paul describes in the above verses is ineffective and a waste of
time. When people look back to the day of Pentecost and see or hear the
term ‘speaking in tongues’, one needs to understand that with a new heart
came also a new tongue, or a new way of speaking. Besides, what good or how
effective would the disciples have been if they spoke in a language no one
understood. When I see people that think speaking in tongues is impressive
it reminds me of a child with a new instrument, like a guitar; the child
will strum on it and make a lot of noise, but it is nothing that resembles
anything uplifting or something anyone wants to listen to.
1 Corinthians 14:9-11 So likewise ye, except
ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known
what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air. (10) There are, it may be,
so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without
signification. (11) Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I
shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be
a barbarian unto me. (KJV)
How did the Lord work with you in the
beginning of your walk, did He hammer you with things to try to impress
you, or did He work with you where you were at? How effective are you going
to be unless you learn to hear the Holy Spirit for yourself and then learn
to convey that message in a way that is easy to be understood as well? If
you don’t train your Spiritual senses to learn how to hear, as well as
speak, well, then you too are nothing more than a barbarian, someone from
another country speaking a foreign language. How easy is it when you try to
communicate let alone it being effective, when you are not speaking a language
understood or in a way that one will understand and interpret correctly?
Colossians 4:3-4 Withal praying also for
us, that God would open unto us a door of utterance, to speak the mystery
of Christ, for which I am also in bonds: (4) That I may make it manifest,
as I ought to speak. (KJV)
The things of God are described as a
mystery; kind of like someone from another country who does things
different than us and speaks differently as well. Paul’s prayer was that he
could take the things of God that were shown unto him by the Holy Spirit
and let the Spirit convey that message through him in a way that it could
be understood. You know, there is no one script or thinking that you need
to witness to people all of the time to be effective, but rather it is
learning to let the Spirit speak through you, that is what will be
effective. The Bible says the Word of God will not return void; so it is
learning to hear what the Word of God is for each and every situation, and
person, that is going to produce the results God intended.
1 Corinthians 1:5-6 That in every thing
ye are enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge; (6) Even as
the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you: (KJV)
The utterance, the answer we should be
giving to everyone is the testimony of Christ, which is a mystery to the
carnal man but readily revealed to those in the Spirit. Your utterance,
your speaking under the inspiration of the Spirit will be giving testimony
to what Christ has done on our behalf, and how He is seated at the right
hand of the Father to continue to mediate God’s plan of salvation on our
behalf as well. The more you seek the things which are above the more you
will be able to effectively give the testimony of Christ, being enriched
with the ability to know and speak on His behalf to His people.
Ephesians 6:18-20 Praying always with all
prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all
perseverance and supplication for all saints; (19) And for me, that
utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make
known the mystery of the gospel, (20) For which I am an ambassador in
bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak. (KJV)
An ambassador is someone sent to
represent a country or nation, and brings a message on their behalf. An
ambassador does not strive, or fight, or threaten, but rather brings the
terms and conditions for peace and then allows the people to decide for
themselves. It is the goal, the purpose of the ambassador, as well as each
and every believer in Christ, to know how to deliver the message from above
that will be effective as well as easy to be understood. So what kind of
utterance are you giving today and who is it inspired by? If you are giving
utterance by the Holy Spirit then it will be effective, if not, then it
will be barbaric, ineffective, and basically utter nonsense as well.
