A Taming Of The Shrewd

James 3:7-8 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: (8) But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. (KJV)

Williams New Testament translation of James 3:7-8

7. For every kind of beasts and birds, of reptiles and sea animals, can be, or have been, tamed by man; 8. but the tongue no human being can tame.  It is an evil incapable of being quieted, full of deadly poison.

Whether you have watched outdoor programs or have gone to a zoo, we see man has invented ways to capture large animals keeping them in captivity. Some of these animals are quite large in size; elephants, rhinos, or even whales are brought into captivity and kept in their place. Isn’t interesting to see that something so small, something so overlooked can be deadly, the tongue of man he cannot tame on his own. You know, if an animal wandered into a residential area especially one that is large in size and known to be dangerous, an alert would go out and man would immediately find a way to tame the beast so that it would not cause injury or death. Spiritually there is an eternal danger that is wandering around, something that needs to be curbed or restrained, so that we don’t end up injured or worse yet dead. You know, if no man can tame the tongue, being the fact that death and life are in the power of that tongue, then it would do one good to find out who and how this deadly force can be tamed and kept from harming you.

John 10:9-10 I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. (10) The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. (KJV)

You know, God has an open door policy, and would love to see His people enter into His rest and cease from their own works as well as words. That knocking on your heart, the door of your heart, it would do you good to open it and allow the Lord and His Word to enter into it as well. Out of the abundance of your heart will the tongue speak; so, basically with what measure you allow into your heart is what will come out of it. That is why the Lord is standing on the threshold of your heart waiting for you to allow Him access into it, so that His Word can shield you from all the fiery darts of the wicked one. Your words will either bind or loose; it depends on which realm you are unleashing them from. By keeping your body in subjection to the Spirit allows you to walk and talk in the realm God intended for you to operate in, a path of life, speaking words that are Spirit and life. The flip side though is that by not taking the time to hear the message God is delivering through Christ on a daily basis, that doubt and fear that you allowed to creep back into the heart is going to come back out in the form of negative words that will bind the Lord from working on your behalf and loose the enemy to keep you bound in his fallen realm.

John 12:48-50 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. (49) For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. (50) And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak. (KJV)

This man Jesus of Nazareth was a forerunner for us, the first born into the realm of the Spirit, to give us a perfect example of how to walk the path of life. This was a man that was led by the Spirit of Christ within Him, and is now seated at the right hand of the Father. Given the fact that this man walked this earth without falling into the realm of sin, we see in the above verses how vital the words He spoke are, knowing that only Christ can tame the tongue and keep us in good standing with our Father. Are you aware of how important your words are; do you realize what a deadly situation we put ourselves in with just a slip of the tongue, how quickly we can fall from grace and loose the enemy again? Can you imagine what your life would be like if you would not speak of yourself or how you view things after the outward, but rather you only spoke what you heard personally from the Father?

Mark 11:23-24 For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. (24) Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them. (KJV)

Words like ‘I doubt it’ or ‘I can’t believe it’ should no longer be a part of a Christian’s vocabulary, rather replaced with words like ‘I can do all things through Christ’ and ‘with God all things are now possible’ because I am able to believe and operate in His realm. But keep in mind, it can only take one word, one sentence of doubt, to slip out of your mouth and that beast that was tamed and kept in a cage is now loosed again and wreaking havoc; that tongue that should have been tamed is now spewing deadly poison, killing the new growth.

Psalms 140:1-3 Deliver me, O LORD, from the evil man: preserve me from the violent man; (2) Which imagine mischiefs in their heart; continually are they gathered together for war. (3) They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent; adders' poison is under their lips. Selah. (KJV)

You know, if someone let a deadly snake loose in a crowded area the first thing someone would do is call animal control and get that thing tamed or caged so that it would not harm anyone. We as Christians used to operate in a deadly realm before our conversion, letting poison flow from our tongues, but now that we know better it is up to us to keep this deadly member in subjection, so that it doesn’t cause harm to us or anyone around us either. Are you as quick to catch yourself if you unleash something harmful, or has the enemy lulled you to sleep with his venom, paralyzing you and keeping you bound in his realm?

Titus 1:10-12 For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision: (11) Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake. (12) One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies. (KJV)

As we see there are many vain talkers, shrewd malicious people speaking things they claim are of God but for the wrong reasons, mostly to satisfy the outward man and not the inward one. Paul described these people as evil beasts, untamed and roaming around, basically seeking anyone they can devour. The tongue can no man tame, no man on earth I should say; but there is someone seated at the right hand of the Father that can show us how to keep our tongue tamed, and in the realm He intended for us to be in.
