Wrestlemania
1 Timothy 6:3-4 If any man teach
otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord
Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; (4) He
is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words,
whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, (KJV)
Ever watch daytime reality shows, or the
ever popular wrestling shows where they keep the people fired up and
emotional? Many Christians are like that, real dramatic and on the fight,
ready to take on any cause at the drop of a hat, ready to make their voice
heard.
Matthew 12:18-20 Behold my servant, whom
I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my
spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles. (19) He shall
not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets. (20)
A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench,
till he send forth judgment unto victory. (KJV)
If you go back and do a study on the
Lord, you will see a man that would not wrestle with flesh and blood, a man
who was not trying to make a name for Himself, but rather one who sought to
please God only. In fact many so called Christians today spend a lot of time
fussing and fighting with each other rather than fighting a good fight of
faith and avoiding strifes and contentions. Many today actually look for
opportunities to engage in silly strifes and contentions, debates they
think they will win, when in reality the fact that they even engaged in
this childish stuff in the first place makes them a loser.
Matthew 12:19-20 (from Barnes'
Notes)
Verse
19. [He shall not strive ...] He shall not shout as a warrior. He shall be
meek, retiring, and peaceful. Streets were places of concourse. The meaning
is, that he should not seek publicity and popularity.
Verse
20. [A bruised reed ...] The reed is an emblem of feebleness, as well as of
fickleness or want of stability, <Matt. 11:7>. A bruised, broken reed
is an emblem of the poor and oppressed. It means that he would not oppress
the feeble and poor, as victorious warriors and conquerors did. It is also
an expressive emblem of the soul broken and contrite on account of sin;
weeping and mourning for transgression. He will not break it; that is, he
will not be severe, unforgiving, and cruel. He will heal it, pardon it, and
give it strength.
Are you trying to prove a point, like our
Lord needs your help? Do you think you will be heard for your much speaking?
Which by the way, the Bible says a fool is known by a multitude of words.
Who are you trying to convince? If you were really sure and confident of
who you are in Christ you would know that we are already winners, and that
God does not need our help or some loudmouth to speak on His behalf.
Watching those that profess they are of God, fighting and fussing with the
world, is another clear cut example of the blind leading the blind into a
ditch.
Matthew 12:20 (from Matthew
Henry's Commentary)
A
bruised reed shall he not break. Some understand this of his patience in
bearing with the wicked; he could as easily have broken these Pharisees as
a bruised reed, and have quenched them as soon as smoking flax; but he will
not do it till the judgment-day, when all his enemies shall be made his
footstool. Others rather understand it of his power and grace in bearing up
the weak. In general, the design of his gospel is to establish such a
method of salvation as encourages sincerity, though there be much
infirmity; it does not insist upon a sinless obedience, but accepts an
upright, willing mind. As to particular persons, that follow Christ in
meekness, and in fear, and in much trembling, observe,
God doesn’t need you to prove His
existence, and many times those that think they are helping His cause are
actually hindering it. However if one learns who they are in Christ and how
to be an effective ambassador, then they will know how to deliver His
message of love in an effective way, speaking only what they hear from God,
words that are Spirit and life, not carnal and strife.
2 Timothy 2:23-26 But foolish and
unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes. (24) And
the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to
teach, patient, (25) In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves;
if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the
truth; (26) And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the
devil, who are taken captive by him at his will. (KJV)
You know, people ask questions or seek to
poke holes in the Lord’s doctrine, claiming there are contradictions in the
Bible. These are people you definitely need to avoid because they are not
looking for truth; something our Lord warned us about, not casting His
precious pearls before swine. These are people that are willingly ignorant,
because rather than look into their own closets and clean out the skeletons
they would rather open everyone else’s. The fact that they chose to be
snared and taken in by the devil is one thing, it’s another if you chose to
engage in these endless, silly, carnal wrestling matches.
Proverbs 29:8-9 Scornful men bring a city
into a snare: but wise men turn away wrath. (9) If a wise man contendeth
with a foolish man, whether he rage or laugh, there is no rest. (KJV)
Again we see the snare that takes many
down, one the Lord is asking His people to avoid. Don’t think you will find
peace or rest by winning an argument, because just the fact that you got
involved in one makes you a loser already.
Proverbs 20:3 It is an honour for a man
to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling. (KJV)
You know, as fake as the wrestling
programs (i.e. Wrestlemania) on TV are, so are those that engage in this
behavior and allow it to manifest in their walk with the Lord.
